Our Ministry of Service
Our work is all about helping others. Plain and simple.
Yes, we are a church, but a church can mean many things.
We are a church without walls dedicated to serving ALL people.
Walls would constrain us.
Why? Because we are big on outreach, and big on being in the field where people in need are struggling. And we do this through our ministry of service that is made up of over 16,000 professionals, working across the country, and touching the lives of almost 1.5 million people annually. We take our calling seriously because the problems people face today are serious: homelessness, poverty, unemployment, lack of education, just to name a few.
So what is this ministry of service?
As members of the Volunteers of America organization, we care for people who feel abandoned, who have given up all hope. We care for the homeless and the developmentally disabled. We care for our veterans, frail older adults and seniors, formerly incarcerated individuals, people struggling with addictions, children, youth and families and so many more.
We're In the Love Business
And this isn’t just talk. We walk the walk.
Our ministry of service can be witnessed in our affordable housing, assisted living and skilled nursing care homes, and the hundreds of programs we have across the country to help thousands of people over the hard times—the unexpected times that can turn one’s life upside down.
The loss of a job or loved one can place people right in the middle of a financial and emotional storm, potentially leaving them without an income to support themselves or care for their children. Who can help them?
Sometimes it may be a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time or simply a bad decision that lead’s to a prison term. Who will be there to help after time is served?
Or maybe it is the struggle associated with overcoming addiction. Substance abuse has a wicked way of destroying the joy of living a full life. Who will help with the fight and the return to a stable life?
Many of our nation’s veterans, young and old, suffer from the invisible wounds of combat. The war may be over, but they may still be fighting their personal demons, keeping happiness and success at bay. Who can possibly understand these inner conflicts?
We do. We will. We can. Our ministry of service provides the tools to help all of these individuals to get back on their feet and return home with a fresh start.
So we ask you to take a good look at what we do, and not be put off by the fact that Volunteers of America is a church. Yes, we are believers, but this is the commandment that spurs our mission and we hold most dear: to love one another.
Our CEO and national president, Mike King, often says that we are in the “love business.” And nothing could be truer. Compassionate caring for others is at the heart of all we do.
We have answered the call to a ministry of service that sets the Volunteers of America Church apart from all others. We hope that you will support us in this calling, and help your brothers and sisters at the same time.
